Well, I'm finally thinking about getting my own domain. I've been wanting to do it fo a couple of years. I've been using softcom for my website since 97 or so, but I have to use a long name for my url to my pictures, and I am limited on size.
I had started thinking I would just use my old computer as its own server, and I really wouldn't have to worry about size, as that computer has a 20+ gigabyte harddrive, with 6 of that still free, and I could easily from up a lot more by deleting all the games and other unused/unneeded software, and moving all the pictures to this computer.
But, because at&t changes the IP address every once-in-a-while, and unannounced, I'd have to always worry about keeping up on updating the router. Not often, but I'd always worry about it.
At least if it was on another server, I wouldn't have to worry about someone breaking past the firewall on my system and getting files I don't want people to have, or getting viruses via an open port on the website. On a different machine, only the files that need to be there for the site would be there.
I've been looking at a lot of cheap sites, and I think I found one. I'll have to think about it.
I better think fast, because my softcom account expires soon.
